Volkswagen Tera Compact SUV Revealed Via Spy Shots: Launch?

Expected to debut by the end of 2025 or early 2026 in India, the Volkswagen Tera will rival the likes of Skoda Kylaq, Mahindra XUV3XO, Tata Nexon and Maruti Brezza amongst others.

Volkswagen India confirmed that a new compact SUV for the Indian market is under development. Dubbed Tera, the road testing of the brand’s most affordable offering in India has already commenced. In the latest development, the Volkswagen Tera has been spotted sans camouflage, revealing the production-ready design in full flesh. Let’s dive into the details of the Volkswagen Tera Compact SUV revealed.

Volkswagen Tera Compact SUV Revealed: Exterior Design

The Volkswagen Tera Compact SUV has been spied for the first time without camouflage, revealing the production-ready design in full flesh. Sharing the design ques with its elder siblings like the Taigun, the front fascia sports a set of sleek LED headlamps, with a camouflaged grille which will likely get a connected LED DRL.

The lower grille gets large air ducts on both ends and it is also smartly covered to hide the details. We expect it to get gloss black treatment. Towards the sides, the Tera appears more of a raised hatchback or crossover. We can spot subtle roof rails, wheel-arch cladding, side-body cladding and a set of 17-inch wheels which are covered to hide the details.

The rear section gets all-black bumpers, connected LED tail lamps and a blacked-out roof spoiler along with a rear wiper.

Volkswagen Tera Compact SUV Revealed: Platform & Dimensions

The Volkswagen Tera will be based on the familiar MQB-A0-IN platform or what internally is called the MQB-AO27. This platform also underpins the newly launched Skoda Kylaq along with the Skoda-VW India 2.0 program cars including the Kushaq, Slavia, Virtus and Taigun. This platform is rated for a 5-star crash test rating in Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP.

Talking about the dimensions, the Volkswagen Tera will measure just under 4 metres long with a wheelbase of 2,566 mm which is identical to the Kylaq.

Volkswagen Tera Compact SUV Revealed: Interiors & Features

While the details about the interiors of the Upcoming Volkswagen Tera are scarce at the moment, we expect it to share a lot with the Taigun sold in the Indian market. This will be in line with Skoda Kylaq and Kushaq cabin familiarity.

The dashboard layout will likely be carried forward from Taigun with the option of analogue and fully digital instrument clusters. The infotainment system will be a 10-inch unit with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

In terms of features, expect the Tera to get an electric sunroof, front-ventilated seats with power adjustability, automatic HVAC, front and rear armrests and auto-dimming IRVM amongst others.

Volkswagen Tera Compact SUV Revealed: Powertrain

Under the hood, the Volkswagen Tera will be powered by the familiar 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol three-cylinder engine putting out 114 bhp and 178 Nm of peak torque. The engine will be mated to a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The claimed fuel efficiency of the Tera will be around 18-20 kmpl.

The Volkswagen Tera is aimed at emerging markets like South America and India. The compact SUV will first debut in Brazil later this year and we can expect it to be officially unveiled in India around the same timelime. In India, it will be positioned below the Taigun as the brand’s most affordable offering in the country.

We expect Volkswagen to offer Tera in 3-4 variants, much like the Kylaq. The prices are expected to start from Rs. 8 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base-spec comfortline variant.
